Car insurance requirements in Virginia

Virginia doesn’t require drivers to carry auto insurance, but uninsured drivers must pay a $500 fee each year. These are the coverage types and limit amounts required for auto insurance in Virginia if one chooses to purchase it: 

  • Bodily Injury Liability to cover injury or death related expenses in an accident when you’re at fault – $25,000 limit per person/$50,000 limit per accident 
  • Property Damage Liability to cover property damage expenses in an accident when you’re at fault – $20,000 limit 
  • Uninsured Motorist Coverage to cover medical expenses in an accident when the other driver is at fault but doesn’t have any car insurance – Bodily Injury: $25,000 limit per person/$50,000 limit per accident; Property Damage: $20,000 
  • Underinsured Motorist Coverage to cover medical expenses in an accident when the other driver is at fault but doesn’t have enough liability insurance – Grouped with uninsured motorist coverage
