Highest Rated Car Insurance Companies

There are dozens of well-known car insurance companies on the market, but not all insurers are created equal, especially when it comes to ratings. The highest-rated car insurance companies often have the best customer service, coverage options, discounts, and financial strength. Evaluating insurance companies based on third-party ratings can help you choose the best one.

How do I find ratings for car insurance companies?

There are lots of third-party organizations that score car insurance companies. For example, AM Best, Moody’s, and Standards & Poor’s (S&P) rate insurance providers based on financial strength. These ratings indicate whether an insurance company is performing well financially, which impacts its ability to meet policyholder obligations and pay claims.

J.D. Power, one of the most reputable rating organizations, scores insurance companies based on overall customer satisfaction and claim satisfaction. To compile these ratings, J.D. Power leverages responses from thousands of insurance customers. J.D. Power customer satisfaction ratings account for factors like billing, claims, agent interactions, policy offerings, and price.

Another important rating organization is the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). The NAIC Complaint Index database tracks the number of complaints an insurer receives in relation to its size.

Which car insurance company has the highest customer satisfaction?

To determine which car insurance provider has the highest customer satisfaction ratings, we can look at J.D. Power’s 2022 U.S. Auto Insurance Study. In the study, insurance companies are ranked by region, so the highest-rated company depends on where you live. Below are the highest-rated insurance companies for overall customer satisfaction according to J.D. Power.

1. USAA

In every region, USAA is the top-rated car insurance company for overall customer satisfaction. USAA also has an A++ financial strength rating from AM Best, which is the highest rating possible. The company has a score of Aaa from Moody’s and an AA+ rating from S&P.

However, USAA does have more complaints than expected according to the NAIC Complaint Index. USAA’s index is 1.95, which is higher than the industry benchmark of 1.0. In addition, USAA only sells policies to active duty and retired military personnel, so not everyone qualifies.

2. State Farm

State Farm Insurance

State Farm is the largest car insurance company in the country, based on total market share. In J.D. Power’s U.S. Auto Insurance Study, State Farm was rated the best car insurance provider for overall customer satisfaction in the Southwest region. The company was rated above average in every region except California.

State Farm has excellent financial strength, with an A++ rating from AM Best, an Aa1 rating from Moody’s, and an AA rating from S&P.

Out of the highest rated car insurance companies we highlighted, State Farm has the most complaints. State Farm’s NAIC complaint index is 2.72, which means the company has twice as many complaints as expected for its size.

3. Geico

GEICO insurance

Geico has excellent customer satisfaction ratings from J.D. Power. The company is rated above average in all but three regions (Texas, Southeast, and Mid-Atlantic). Geico has superior financial strength, with an A++ rating from AM Best, AA+ rating from S&P, and Aa1 rating from Moody’s. However, Geico’s complaint index is 1.92, which is above average.

4. Allstate

Overall, Allstate has decent reviews across the board. J.D. Power rated Allstate above average for overall customer satisfaction in the California, Florida, and North Central regions. The company also has good financial strength, with an A+ rating from AM Best, an AA- rating from S&P, and Aa3 rating from Moody’s. In terms of complaints, Allstate’s NAIC complaint index is 2.19, which means it has more complaints than expected for its size.

5. Progressive

progressive insurance

Progressive is one of the most well-known car insurance companies on the market. It’s also one of the largest providers, with almost 14% of the total market share. But while Progressive has a large customer base, it doesn’t have the best ratings.

Progressive is rated below average for overall customer satisfaction in every region in J.D. Power’s U.S. Auto Insurance Study. The company also has more complaints than expected for its size, with an index of 1.45.

Progressive has good financial strength scores, with an A+ rating from AM Best, an AA rating from S&P, and an Aa rating from Moody’s.

5. Liberty Mutual

Liberty Mutual gets mixed reviews from J.D. Power for overall customer satisfaction. The company scored above average in the Central region but scored below average in most other regions (Liberty Mutual was not rated for the Northwest and Texas regions).

Liberty Mutual also has a high complaint index, with a score is 2.66. It also has the lowest financial strength scores out of the highest rated companies, with an A rating from AM Best, an A rating from S&P, and an A2 rating from Moody’s.

Other highly rated car insurance companies

The highest-rated car insurance companies mentioned above sell policies in almost every state. However, there are also some smaller, regional insurance carriers that ranked above average in J.D. Power’s study for the regions they serve.

For example, Erie Insurance is the top-rated company in the Mid-Atlantic and North Central region, Amica is the top-rated carrier in New England, and Shelter has the best customer satisfaction in the Central region.

When comparing car insurance, it’s worth looking at national and regional providers to find the best company for your needs.

Which car insurance company has the best reviews?

USAA has the best reviews out of any car insurance company. USAA has the highest customer satisfaction rating from J.D. Power in every U.S. region. It also has a perfect A++ financial strength rating from AM Best.

However, you can only purchase a car insurance policy from USAA if you’re an active duty or retired military servicemember. Some immediate family members of military personnel can also buy coverage.
