Coverage type & requirements in Michigan

Michigan requires four types of car insurance coverage: bodily injury liability, property damage liability, personal injury protection, and property protection. However, many drivers choose to purchase additional coverage types, such as uninsured motorist coverage, to help cover certain costs associated with different types of accidents.

Additionally, if you’re one of the many drivers who lease or finance their vehicle, check with your lender about any additional insurance they may require. Although not mandated by the state, some lenders may require full coverage auto insurance in Michigan.

It’s important for residents to know car insurance requirements in Michigan. The following are the coverage types and limit amounts Michigan requires; however, these minimums are just a starting point. You may want to consider increasing your coverage limits or purchasing additional coverage for further protection.

How to get affordable car insurance in Michigan

Michigan offers residents a rich history and exciting present. The state is home to the Michigan University Wolverines, and residents statewide enjoy watching rivalry football games against the nearby Ohio State Buckeyes.

Whether you’re thinking about moving to Michigan or have called it home for a long time, you need car insurance. All drivers are required to carry certain types of auto insurance in Michigan.

A great first step for finding affordable car insurance is to compare quotes from top insurance companies in Michigan. Fortunately, Rate Retriever can connect you with top insurance providers who may offer affordable policies so you have the coverage you need without breaking the bank.

Why is Michigan auto insurance important?

First, Michigan car insurance is required by the state and driving without it can result in a fine of up to $500, up to one year in jail, or both. It is important to have the minimum required auto insurance in Michigan and keep it up to date without a lapse in coverage.

Another vital reason to have car insurance in Michigan is that, depending on your policy and coverage limits, your insurance helps cover certain costs should you get into a car accident. This can reduce the burden of paying for accident-related costs out of pocket, and it can help you have peace of mind while on the road.

Whether you’re interested in the minimum auto insurance required or want more coverage for additional protection, we can connect you with top car insurance providers in Michigan.

About Rate Retriever

At Rate Retriever, our mission is to create the best possible experience for people who are searching for new insurance. So we took everything we hated about comparing insurance quotes online – the spam, the long questionnaires, the inaccuracy of quote prices – and threw it out the window, favoring a short form that matches you with top providers for your unique needs.

Rate Retriever is an independent company that is not owned by an insurance provider, nor do we provide insurance ourselves. This independence allows us to serve as an insurance marketplace, allowing you to compare insurance companies to find one that meets your unique needs at a price you can afford.

We may earn a commission when you click one of the links or call one of the providers listed on our site; however, we do not allow our partnerships to influence the information we provide.
